Menna & Ethiopia
Songs from Ethiopia - Menna’s roots
Menna reaches her audience with a warm and expressive voice through interpretations of Soul and Pop Songs as well as her own original songs.
But Menna has more to offer.
Her roots are in Ethiopia and although she was born in Germany, she speaks the Amharic language fluently and stays connected with the country.
Following her high school graduation in 2011, she undertook a long and inspiring trip to the home of her parents and came into contact with the Ethiopian music scene. 2015 she returned to the capital Addis Abeba on a journey of musical exploration and jammed in various music clubs like Mama’s Kitchen & Coffee House.
Now she has put together a program featuring traditional Ethiopian evergreens like “Tizita” as well as current Ethio-Pop Songs.
She is accompanied by two musicians, Gernot Blume on electric piano, harp and guitar and Julie Spencer on percussion. Through their studies of world music and ethnomusi- cology as well as many performances of different musics from various cultures, both artists bring experience and a unique sensitivity to the interpretation of this repertoire.
The three musicians have already collaborated on various projects, such as a tour through the USA in 2013 with concerts in New York City and Washington D.C., among others, and are now looking forward to their newest program with Ethiopian world music.
